SUBJECT: Proposal on Video Streaming

The old way of watching television is rapidly dying in our culture, less and less we find families watching prime time shows together and groups of friends watching a shared favorite together. The Gen-Y generation is now accustomed to getting information almost immediately and whenever they please. The popularity of Twitter, text and Blackberry messaging and smart phones show how Gen-Y has grown to want their information immediately. This trend has spilled into the use of websites to watch television programs. Hulu.com has emerged as the leading TV streaming site. I propose to write a report on why Hulu and other similar sites should keep their video streaming free and what the future of these sites look like.


Need
Gen- Y has accepted internet streaming has the main source for their viewing needs, and use and popularity will continue to increase in the future.


· Gen-Y now watches programs whenever they please instead of their scheduled network times.
· Gen-Y uses these services as long as they are free, so revenues for these sites must come from advertisement sales.
· Gen-Y will purchase the newest technology that offers easier access to these sites.

There have been rumors that current free video streaming sites will become premium sites soon. Their popularity seems to warrant this switch, but all its success is because of the free video content they provide. Just as quickly as these sites rose they will decline in the same fashion if fees are incorporated. Their next best option is to then sell advertisement space on their sites. This should not be a problem since many companies have already realized the opportunities present in this area and already started utilizing them.

The future of web-steaming video also affects the technology hardware market. Many new products are arising that make viewing these site more enjoyable and practical. Devices such as smart phones, Ipads, and Flo Tv all currently allow users to easily view shows on the go, and are selling well because of that aspect. Other products will emerge such as Wi-Fi televisions and plans from cell phone providers to stream video directly to devices.

The proposed report “The future landscape of Web TV” will cover the following topics

· Advertisements on free websites and their expanding need, also the demographics involved in online marketing
· Why Hulu.com, ESPN3.com, and other similar sites should keep their services free
· New market opportunities created by the popularity of these sites
